How do you add dates to the pictures you scan?

As part of our digitization process, we create file names that include all the relevant information about the date of the image. The naming structure makes it easier to identify and access your photos once they are in digital format.

Dates on your photos, either written on the back or grouped with labels, will be used to name your digital files.

Using that structure, if a group of photos is labelled "1994-11 Thanksgiving," all those images will be digitally named with that same structure, so you can search and sort them easily.

Our naming system organizes your collection chronologically and by event so that you can quickly find specific memories without having to scroll through hundreds of unmarked files. As part of this organization, your physical collection moves seamlessly into your digital archive.

Determining dates for unmarked photos

There are several ways to determine the dates on your photos if they aren't clearly marked. On the back of the photos, a stamp date indicates when they were printed, which means they were taken around the same time. The manufacture date of stamps on photo paper can also provide clues.

Photos themselves may contain context clues as well. The hairstyle, the clothing trend, the brace, or even what is in the background of the picture may help determine when it was taken. You can group photos by decade or era if you're not certain about specific dates during the organizing process.
